Description
One whole nutmeg, a little grating, and your kheer suddenly tastes like someone’s grandmother made it.
What It Is
Our Whole Nutmeg (Jaifal) comes as a hard, round seed, meant to be grated fresh whenever you need it. It’s a small ingredient, but it shows up in some of the most comforting dishes in Pakistani cooking.
Taste, Smell & Colour
The taste is warm and slightly sweet, with a hint of spice that isn’t sharp like chili but still noticeable. It has a strong, sweet-woody smell that fills the air the second you start grating it. Inside, the colour is a light brown with darker veins running through it.
Texture
Hard and solid on the outside, so it needs a fine grater to turn into powder. Freshly grated, it’s soft and slightly oily to the touch.
Used In
- Kheer and other milk-based sweets
- Garam masala blends
- Halwa and sheer khurma
- Warm milk before bed, desi style
Other Uses
- Grate over cappuccino or hot chocolate
- Add to mashed potatoes or creamy pasta sauces
- Mix into cake and cookie batters
- Use a pinch in spiced tea or mulled drinks
Why Buy This One
Pre-ground nutmeg from the bazaar loses its smell fast, sometimes within weeks of grinding. Whole nutmeg holds onto its flavour far longer, so what you grate today tastes just as strong as it did months ago.
We pack it in craft paper, not plastic. That keeps the natural oils inside the nutmeg from getting affected by any plastic smell, so the seed stays the way it should be.
How To Store
Keep the whole seeds in a closed container, away from heat and moisture. Grate only what you need each time, and the rest stays fresh and strong for a long time.
If your kheer or halwa ever tastes like something’s missing, it’s usually this. A little fresh nutmeg is often the difference people can’t quite name.
